Mission Statement
Quality, Value, Service, and Trusting Relationships is the Cornerstone of our Success

Log Product
We supply a variety of machined log sizes and profiles in various species. Pine, Spruce, Western Red Cedar, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Log diameters in 4", 6", 8", 10", and 12". Our most popular log of choice has been the double tongue and groove 6" x 8" - "D" log in old growth Western Red Cedar.
Benefits are:
-
Climatizes well in dryer climates like Alberta
-
Offers excellent structural stability resulting in ease of assembly and maintenance with minimal checking
-
Pleasant natural aroma
-
Accepts wood preservatives like no other - porosity absorbs and holds pigments better than other species - resulting in less maintenance
-
Natural oils in cedar provide resistance to decay and insects
-
Thermal value is optimum - ask us to explain why this is so
-
Flat or round log wall interiors are available
In the end, it is a personal choice of the look you prefer. We have constructed many buildings in both the 6 x 8 "D" log and the 6 x 8 round on round log. Both log systems build equally well. Dimensional 8 x 8 logs, 10" and 12" round logs are also available. Each system offers superb thermal value for our Canadian winters. Given that less than 30% of heat loss is through the wall, it may be more logical to invest your dollars in better quality windows than to select a thicker log. Again, in the end, it is your choice.

Structural Integrity
Our logs are naturally air dried to a uniform level of dryness before milling (approximately 19% or less). This consistency results in ease of assembly and uniformity in settlement. Settlement (namely compaction and shrinkage) is a natural occurrence in all log buildings, and is not something to be feared, however it must be taken into account that the log walls will, over time, reduce in height by 1 1/2" to 2" in an 8' wall. Allowances are made during construction to ensure that settlement of the wall system will be accommodated. To ensure that the building has minimal air infiltration, we install a double row of ethafoam gasket material on top of each tongue and criss-crossed through the notch. A bead of clear caulking is applied to the outer top of each log during construction to further ensure sealing the log wall against a strong wind, driving rain, and insect infestation. Once all the logs are stacked, a 1/2" x 10' cadmium plated steel rod is dropped down through pre-drilled holes at specified intervals (approximately every 8 feet on average and double in the corners), and anchored by way of washers and bolts to the floor system. When tightened, the rod system ensures that the logs are seated properly and prevents any possible movement in the wall system. During the settlement period, the rod ends will be accessible around the foundation and are to be tightened periodically. This steel rod anchoring system combined with a quality milled log in Western Red Cedar provides you with the most uniform, airtight, and stable log structure available today. Finally, once the building is totally finished, a bead of caulking is applied vertically to the exterior corners to further ensure weather tightness.

Labour and Training
Our many years of experience in the building of log structures is included in each and every building package we sell. We delight in sharing our knowledge with you whether you are building one or a multiple of buildings. Our log assembly process is relatively straight forward. It does not require cranes or heavy equipment, and the log shell is usually assembled in 2-4 days depending upon size and manpower. We recently erected a lodge for Ducks Unlimited, and with 6 fairly able bodies, the log shell was finished in 3 days. The building was a 3,800 square foot single level structure. The inexperienced manpower very quickly learned a new skill in log construction which they can use again and again. This may be a valuable benefit to your people.

The Process
To get started on a building program is a matter of balancing what you want or need in a building with respect to a budget. You are invited to visit our website to view a variety of plans. However, our experience is that most customers have very specific needs and therefore will proceed with a custom plan. We will meet with you and do a site visit to get a feel for your needs, desires, and to ensure that the building design suits the landscape and your budget. In a preliminary fashion, we can discuss cost on a general square foot basis, however, until we put a plan on paper to tender, we cannot establish actual costs. Therefore, the sooner we can start the design process, the sooner we can take your building from a want or need to a finished and usable structure. It is most helpful if you can provide a basic sketch of what you want in a building, or give us a completed budget, or both. Depending upon the size and complexity of the building, we will ask for a drawing deposit for preliminary plans @ .35 per sq. ft. which will be credited toward your contract total. Our design department will provide a preliminary floor plan with 2 elevations and a three dimensional rendering. This will give you a basic design to work with for further planning, yet allowing for changes to suit your needs. Once the preliminary plan is finalized and signed off, a further deposit of .55 per sq. ft. is required to produce full architectural working drawings. Again, this is credited to your package purchase. We use the latest computer design software available and can offer timely communication via the internet. Please note that design parameters for log structures is unique, and it is best to have all design work done for the appropriate log system of choice from the outset. To hire a designer or architect may be somewhat redundant.

Contract Management
As required, we offer a service to you whereby we can oversee a building package to lock up or turn key completion. In most cases we will strive to use local labour and subtrades wherever possible. This approach is usually best as it supports the local economy and is most cost effective. This worked well when we built the sales center for "Silver Tip" in Canmore - using all local trades. Project management would essentially involve a percentage fee on a cost plus basis according to your budget.

Pricing
We want to provide you the best quality and price possible. Once we have a drawing signed off, it is just a matter of arithmetic to prepare a price to contract for the material and services that we will provide. At this stage, 95% of our customers proceed with a building program. When we go to contract, terms of payment will be established according to the scope of supply of material and service.

Summary
A log building is a valuable investment. If you choose the right log system, you will enjoy an affordable building that is energy efficient, easy to erect and maintain, and fits well in your landscape. Remember that we specialize in precision machined logs, and stress the benefits of old growth western red cedar as the species of choice. Fortunately, Canada has a good supply on the west coast. Incidentally, our 6 x 8 western red cedar log is the first log of choice in the discriminating Asian market. This speaks volumes for the standard of quality we have at our disposal. Please beware of other log systems that are highly labour intensive, expensive, or inferior in thickness, fit, or quality in grading or species.
